FASTNET INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS REGATTA

The FASTNET INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS REGATTA 2017 will take place at Schull Sailing Centre (FMOEC) on 18-20 July.   The focus is on Junior Fleets, Silver and Bronze.

School aged sailors are invited to take part in this fun Regatta and get an introduction into what dinghy racing is all about.   There are a limited number of boats available for the event from the sailing Centre, however competitors are asked to bring their own dinghies where possible.

Mid-Term 420 training camp

A great few days was had by the Irish 420 sailors, 11 boats attended with a great bunch of sailors from all corners of the country.

Challenging conditions with 18 to 20 knots daily but with the shelter of Schull harbour, flat seas made sailing really enjoyable and introduced new challenges to the fleet.

The tasks for the week were “Observation and Communication” along with general sailing skills, well done to all and we look forward to same time next year.

FASTNET INTERNATIONAL SCHOOLS REGATTA 2016

010-DSC_7587011-DSC_7588

The Fastnet International Schools Regatta is designed to introduce young sailors to racing.  Many  people attend  a “Start Sailing” course and learn the basics of sailing, but have no way of breaking into racing should they wish to do so.   The Schools Regatta has a simple system where all classes of dinghies can race around a square course in a sheltered venue using a handicap system.  Within the Bronze Fleet, Instructors are available to help sailors find their way round the course and instruct as they race.

We also have a system to prevent more experienced sailors entering a fleet that their standard exceeds and where this is the case they will be moved up to the next fleet, i.e Bronze  Fleet sailors are moved up to Silver Fleet.  The same will apply for more experienced Silver Fleet sailors who will be moved up to a Silver Plus Fleet

WHO CAN ENTER?  The event is open to all full time students of primary and secondary level schools who were under the age of 19 on 1 January 2016.  All competitors under 18 must be accompanied by a responsible adult (Parent, Guardian, Teacher or Coach) throughout the event.  Any single handed or double handed monohull dinghy with a Portsmouth Yardstick (which facilitates handicap ratings) is eligible to enter.

DO I NEED MY OWN BOAT?  We encourage participants to bring their own boats – any dinghy will do, but must be insured by the owner for third party insurance.  The FMOEC charter a range of dinghies for the event.  However, the number of boats available is limited and will be allocated on a “first come, first served basis”.  Costs for this are: Single handed dinghies €20 per day; Double handed €30 per day.  We also ask for a returnable boat damage deposit of €50 for the event.

HOW DO I KNOW WHICH FLEET TO ENTER – BRONZE OR SILVER?

The Bronze Fleet is basically for beginners who have never raced before, sailors that look like they have, will be moved up to the Silver Fleet.

The Silver Fleet is for sailors who have done a few races, over two years.  Again sailors who perform better than this will be moved up to a Silver plus fleet. The above transfers will be done at the discretion of the race committee.

This Regatta is for BEGINNERS, so the main trophies are for the Bronze and Silver Fleet.

THE EVENT TAKES PLACE ON 19th 20th and 21st JULY IN SCHULL

at the FASTNET MARINE OUTDOOR EDUCATION CENTRE

ENTRY FORMS  see here FISR ENTRY FORM 2016

REGISTRATION will be at the centre on the afternoon of the 18th between 15.00 and 18.00hrs

MORNING BRIEFING will be at 10.00 on the Tuesday morning

FIRST RACE will be at 11.00 for all fleets on Tuesday 19th July

SAILING INSTRUCTIONS will be available at Registration

SUMMER SAILING COURSES 2016

Only a few weeks now until our Summer Sailing courses begin and we are looking forward to welcoming new and returning sailors.   We currently have places on all courses.

Although the majority of our sailors are children and teenagers we usually have a few adults of different levels on all weeks.

And if we may be so bold as to sing our own praises… a few quotes from  our sailors and their families from last year:

“I loved going to Da Island!” “Pirates and Boating and sailing races – it was so fun”   “Meeting new people  was definitely the best”

“All staff were excellent and most helpful and welcoming”

“Key is flexibility aspects””

“All the people we met were easy to approach, good info and happy for them to look after our kids”

“Best sailing school I have seen”

SUMMER SAILING COURSES

Surrounded and sheltered by over twenty islands and with a mild climate supported by the Gulf Stream, Schull is renowned for being one of the best sailing areas in Ireland.

Our Dinghy Sailing Courses  run weekly right through the summer and suit all ages and abilities from complete beginner to those looking to build up their skills on the water.   We usually say minimum age of eight years, however we have had some very capable and enthusiastic “almost eights” in the past….

The courses are based on the Irish Sailing Association (ISA) 5 Level Scheme and are taught by experienced and qualified instructors in a safe and fun environment.   They run for five full days, Monday to Friday, however  we  can  be pretty flexible if your time in Schull is limited and it’s difficult to commit to a full course ( although we would usually recommend a minimum of two days).
